“Tour de Coop” a Coup for Chestnut Square
About a month ago, the leadership of McKinney’s Tour de Coop, a self-guided urban chicken coop tour, approached the Heritage Guild of Collin County about a partnership between their event and the Historic McKinney Farmers Market.
“Why would we say no?” said Jaymie Pedigo, Director of HGCC (Chestnut Square). “It is a well run, enjoyable, quality event that fits perfectly with the theme of our market – which is, Do you know where does your food comes from? In three short years, the event has become large enough that it needed a home with another organization, and who better that the Farmers Market?”
The mission of the TOUR de COOP is: to attract visitors to the community, exhibit premier examples of how to successfully merge self-sustainability and functionality with esthetics and promote the local businesses that sponsor the event. Typically, the tour generates enough funds to support a related charity, and with this merger, the funds will go to Chestnut Square to support the Farmers Market and educational programs.
This unique event allows the future hobbyist or curious spectators an opportunity to get an intimate look at several interpretations of what constitutes an "ideal" backyard chicken set-up.
April 30th 2016 will mark the fourth annual Tour de Coop event. The event reaches beyond a fun and quirky thing to do. “It satisfies a bigger curiosity for the many citizens who want to learn where and how their food is cultivated, and perhaps those who want to provide a healthier alternative for their families. Those looking to start a small scale urban garden may want to incorporate hens. Not only is owning hens a gratifying and rewarding hobby, it is a great way to teach young children, helping them become more involved in their environment and becoming a responsible care taker. There are numerous life lessons that can be imparted from rearing any livestock – and we are fortunate enough in McKinney that chickens are permissible in the city ", said Yvonne Evans, creator and leader of the Tour de Coop.
Evans and Pedigo are planning ways in which to incorporate the tour, as well as promote the tour, and its sponsoring businesses, into the Farmers Market. “This is a great opportunity to our sponsors as well, to increase exposure to the hundreds that attend the market each week.” Evans added. “It's a commonsensical dream marriage of compatibility, just like peanut butter & jelly!”
